“Saving Land, Saves Money”

(Preserved Willow Creek Farm, Stump Hall Road in Worcester)

Numerous studies have evaluated the economic value of open space.

Time and again the research has shown that preserving open space adds value to the local economy, saves Townships & community residents money, and that net savings provided by open space make it more cost efficient than development

Open Space is a valuable asset that makes Worcester an attractive & high quality place to live, while strengthening our regional economy

In 2019, Friends of Worcester partnered with the Keystone Conservation Trust to have a “Return on Environment” Study done that looked specifically at the Economic Value of open space within Worcester

In 2022, Montgomery County conducted a similar Return on Environment Study looking at the Economic Value of open space in our County

Economic Benefits of Open Space

Key Findings of Return on Environment Study Research:

  • Raises Property Values

  • Creates Jobs: farms, parks & rec Staff, open space tourism, etc

  • Saves on Municipal Services: flood Mitigation, pollution control, etc

  • Healthcare Cost Savings: from outdoor recreation

Development costs more in services than the tax revenue it brings in.

Open Space mitigates the cost of development, while yielding these other economic benefits.
