At the start of 2022, we renewed our call for a Worcester Open Space Referendum for the fall general election.
We believe residents deserve the chance to weigh in directly on the issue of Open Space at the ballot, and by voting on a referendum question asking whether or not to establish a dedicated Township Open Space Fund to be used to preserve Open Space in Worcester, and expand the community’s trail & park network.
The Supervisors need to vote to authorize an Open Space Referendum question for the ballot by a late summer deadline for residents to vote for or against it at the November general election.
Friends of Worcester has established a committee that is working to get an Open Space Referendum on the township ballot. We created a petition and collected more than 900 resident signatures at the polls during the May 17th, 2022 Primary Election calling for an Open Space Referendum this year, which we then submitted to the Supervisors the following night at their May 2022 Meeting.
The Supervisors have made a commitment to vote at their July 20th, 2022 Business Meeting to put the Referendum on the ballot.
This is an important meeting for us all to attend.
Open Space Referendums in the Region
Neighboring Whitpain Township just passed an Open Space Referendum that was on their May ballot. Nearby Limerick Township also will be voting on an Open Space Referendum during the 2022 General Election.
Residents in more than 10 townships in Montgomery County have voted on Open Space Referendums, as can be seen in the below map. Let’s make sure Worcester doesn’t fall behind on Open Space
